Defender of Tradition: Princess Luka Keʻelikōlani Keanolani Kauanāhoahoa
Begins: March 26, 2016
In the 19th century, Hawaiʻi was changing swiftly; change was everywhere, in its land, traditions, and inevitably its people. Princess Ruth Keʻelikōlani of the Kamehameha Dynasty did not oppose this “westernization” rather she chose to remain Hawaiian while adopting Western ways. The exhibition honors this magnanimous Chiefess, highlighting traditions she held true, which were quintessentially Hawaiian. Misunderstood by many and challenged by some she never wavered from the traditions she protected and practiced even while adapting to the new world.
