We have named this tea–a fundraising event for the Daughters of Hawai‘i at Hulihe‘e Palace–in honor of Wilhelmina Kanaina Kamaileilanikehukaiopuna Rose Weight who was born in Papaikou, Hawai‘i in 1890. She was the first female pa‘u rider to represent the Territory of Hawai‘i in the Los Angeles Floral Parade, now known as the Rose Parade and she graduated from the Kamehameha School for Girls in the class of 1908. The Wai‘oli Tea Room was one of her favorite places for lunch when she and her husband lived in Mānoa.
More than just a way to raise funds for the Daughters of Hawai’i, Wilhelmina’s Tea is serves also as a way of honoring this wonderful woman; her grandsons contribute to the tea with baked goods. Steve Campbell makes the chocolate bundt favors, and Alan Campbell, the scotch shortbread.
–Faye Daniel, Wilhelmina’s granddaughter who resides in Kailua-Kona, Hawai‘i
