Learn how to make a patchwork quilt with Rebecca McKenzie Young

Learn how to quilt from local artisan, Rebecca Young, as she shares her design ideas and creative process for hand sewing patchwork quilts. Rebecca’s one of a kind quilts are made with an exquisite attention to detail and natural fabrics including cotton, organic fibers, and batik.

Rebecca’s lifelong love of sewing began when she started making her own garments. Soon this evolved into crafting baby blankets for her grandchildren and eventually full-sized patchwork quilts.


Hana Lima Hand Dyes with Kathy Lukens

Meet the Gift Shop’s special guest, artist and quilter Kathy Lukens, and see her unique techniques to hand dye fabrics and scarves. She hand crafts each item one at a time and dyes using two colors at once, ice-dyeing, and everyday hardware store items like clamps, plexiglass, and PVC pipes to create her bold and colorful patterns.

Kathy’s passion for hand dyeing gave birth to Hana Lima Hand Dyes and what has become one of the Gift Shop’s favorite local vendors from Hawaii Island. Join us as she shares her exciting and expressive methods for her art.


Keiki Coloring Time

Keiki can learn about Hawaiʻi’s larger than life legends and heroes, native plants and animals, and local island life all while coloring to their hearts content during a Gift Shop visit with Bess Press, one of Hawaiʻi’s leading educational publishers. Gift Shop COLORING TIME visitors may also enter to win Bess Press books!

Bess Press is a family owned, Hawaiʻi-based independent publisher that’s been creating educational resource material and curriculum on Hawaiʻi and the greater Pacific since 1979.

Colleen Kimura of Tutuvi

Meet owner and designer, Colleen Kimura, of Tutuvi and learn about her design process and how she screen prints the lovely clothing and textile designs of Tutuvi.

Colleen draws inspiration for her bold designs from the plants, sea life and diverse cultures of Hawaiʻi, Polynesia and the Pacific Islands. Her collection includes unique fashion wear for men and women, and her signature lavalava, a 100% printed cotton cloth traditionally worn as a wrap by Polynesians.


Helen Nakano of Hanafuda Hawaiʻi

Learn to play the traditional Japanese card game, hanafuda, through Hanafuda Hawaii’s Nā Pua Hawaiʻi card set depicting native Hawaiian plants and flowers for the 12 card suits, or drop by and play a pickup game with the Hanafuda Pōʻai.

Helen Nakano, is the founder of Hanafuda Hawaiʻi and creator of Hanafuda Pōʻai, or “friendship circles”, player groups where people of all ages and skills come together to play and socialize. Visit with us as Helen shares a little about the history of the game and this unique style of cards, and shows how easy it is to learn this well-known local game.
