Make a Head Lei

Lei Poʻo with Kumu Kuhi

Learn to make a beautiful, fresh flower lei poʻo

Poʻo means "head" in Hawaiian, and a lei poʻo is a head lei or flower crown, often worn to celebrate special occasions such as weddings, graduations and hula performances.

Often made with ferns, flowers, and foliage, a lei poʻo can be made using various methods, including wili (wrapping) or haku (braiding), making all haku leis lei poʻo, but not all lei poʻo haku leis.

Your instructor, Kuhi Rowland of "Lei Poʻo Slay by Kuhi," grounds her teaching in aloha ʻāina (love for the land) and ʻike kūpuna (ancestral knowledge), guiding students to create, learn, and connect with Hawaiian culture.

Kumi Kuhi shares,

"I have a great passion and love for my Hawaiian Culture and the 'Aina since the age of 7 years old. I've had the privilege of being surrounded by amazing Makua, Kupuna, and Ohana who have helped to shape my Hawaiian values, culture and way of life through growing up in Hawaii Nei and the many experiences shared by my Ohana. I was able to become the Lei maker I am today because of all these experiences."

Join Kumu Kuhi for a hands-on workshop, 8:00 to noon, to learn the art of making a beautiful floral headpiece in the traditional art of lei po'o. Held in the Hale next to Hānaiakamalama, Queen Emma Summer Palace.

Fee is $100 which includes all materials. Please connect directly with Kuhi to reserve your spot and pay. For reservations, please visit www.leipooslaybykuhi.com or email leipooslaybykuhi@gmail.com
