Muʻumuʻu and Literacy: How Women’s Fashion Changed Hawaiʻi Forever
We are so excited to announce a new partnership with Mu'umu'u Mamas! The Oʻahu-based woman-owned company celebrates the beauty of Hawaiian muʻumuʻu by encouraging appreciation and greater accessibility to these unique garments through programs like their Muʻumuʻu Library. Next month, we'll be launching a special new tour option of Hānaiakamalama with them, but this month, we are delighted to welcome them to our Talk Story. Marion Jones shares with us the history of the muʻumuʻu and reveals an inspiring story of friendship and education. Learn more about the roots of the muʻumuʻu and why its message is still relevant today. We are looking forward to learning more about how this iconic fashion trend began and discovering how its origins were connected to the rise of literacy in old Hawaiʻi.
Meet Marion Jones
Marion Jones is an Oʻahu born entrepreneur, muʻumuʻu enthusiast, and self-proclaimed librarian. After some years away from the islands, Marion returned with a BA in Theology from Belmont Abbey College, where she also worked as a Student Library Assistant. Marion founded Muʻumuʻu Mamas in 2019 with the mission of sharing the joy of Aloha Wear with others. Marion began her collection of muʻumuʻu in her teens, and it continues to grow today. In March 2021, Marion began the Muʻumuʻu Library program, which allows women to borrow and share muʻumuʻu as a community.
