WE ARE PROUD TO PARTNER WITH THE MOANALUA GARDENS FOUNDATION
Since 1978, the Moanalua Gardens Foundation has brought together premier hālau hula from across the islands for a daylong non-competitive festival. The festival celebrates hula and honors Prince Lot Kapuāiwa, who helped reprise hula in Moanalua and reigned as Kamehameha V from 1863 to 1872. As one of Hawai‘i’s most exciting cultural events, the festival allows thousands of island residents and visitors to experience the beauty and spirit of the Hawaiian culture. This year, the Foundation has decided to take the festival online with a televised broadcast and global live-stream.
We are proud to partner with the Foundation for the 44th Annual Prince Lot Hula Festival.
While most people know that Queen Emma was Prince Lot Kapuāiwa’s sister-in-law and that they attended the Chiefs’ Children’s School together, not too many know just how close they were and became further, after Alexander Liholiho, King Kamehameha IV passed. When Prince Lot Kapuāiwa, became King Kamehameha V, he worked closely with then Dowager Queen Emma and was instrumental in honoring the legacy of his brother by seeing through many of the projects Queen Emma and his brother King Kamehameha IV started. Projects included St. Alban’s College which would later become ‘Iolani School, St. Andrew’s Cathedral, and Mauna ‘Ala. In fact, many of our artifacts on exhibit at Hānaiakamalama were acquired by and gifted to the Queen during her travels to Europe, travels sponsored by King Kamehameha V.
