June – Talk Story: Monday Moments with the Daughters
Join us for another "Pau Hana Edition" Talk Story: Monday Moments with the Daughters--a virtual gathering typically held on the last Monday of every month. It's a time to catch up with one another, explore an interesting topic, and learn more about what makes our organization special and unique! We'll start a little later than usual and pau hana just wouldn't be the same without libations and mocktails, so grab your favorite beverage and then kickback for our program!
Queen Emma: Carrying forward a kingdom of education
Makamae Sniffen, Māla Aʻoaʻo Kaiāulu Coordinator at the University of Hawaiʻi's Windward Community College, will share with us a brief moʻokūʻauhau of education in the Hawaiian kingdom and how Emma played a key role in some of our institutions still serving Hawaiʻi today.
About Our Guest Speaker
Makamae Sniffen is a kupa o Wahiawā, but currently resides in Kāneʻohe under the malu of the Koʻolau mountains. She received her BS in Family Resources and Master's in Educational Foundations, with her thesis focused on Queen Emma and her role in the kingdom's education.
This Month's Libation: Whiskey Smash
Our resident mixologist, Mike Pfaefflin the husband of Daughter Alexa Zen, is gracing us again with another specialty cocktail - this time a classic Whiskey Smash! You'll find the recipe below, to follow along at home or feel free to enjoy any beverage of your choice!
Ingredients
2 tbsp mint leaves
1/2 lemon, freshly juiced
1-2 tbsp maple syrup (simple syrup can be substituted)
2 oz whiskey
3 dashes of orange bitters (optional)
Splash of club soda (optional)
Ice
Tools
Lemon press
Cocktail shaker
Muddler
Shot glass
Cocktail strainer
Steps
- Muddle mint leaves with lemon juice in a cocktail shaker.
- Add maple syrup to shaker.
- Add whiskey and ice to shaker. Shake well.
- Add gin into shaker and shake well.
- Fine strain into ice-filled glass.
- Add orange bitters and splash of tonic water
- Enjoy!
